These dehydrated bananas or homemade banana chips are very easy to make in the fruit and vegetable dehydrator. They are a great snack for adults and children.

Snacks are such a fantastic thing that satisfies hunger and gives unlimited taste pleasure. They will save you from hunger in the break between lunch and dinner, make great company while watching a movie, and just cheer you up. But while everyone agrees, about the unsurpassed taste of most snacks, the negative impact of snacking, on the contrary, can be debated forever …

Do you want to have a delicious snack and not feel remorse at the same time? Make homemade banana chips! Dehydrated bananas are a great example of how you can make a wonderful healthy snack from just two ingredients.

Are dehydrated bananas healthy?

Roughly speaking, dehydrated bananas are fresh bananas from which almost 96% of the water has evaporated. As a result, the amount of calories and nutrients in them becomes much more concentrated.

What are the health benefits of bananas?

  • bananas are rich in vitamins and minerals, including potassium, magnesium, vitamin A and iron
  • a handful of dehydrated banana chips is a great source of energy
  • bananas are a fantastic mood booster
  • this fruit is a great help for our digestive system

Well, everything is clear with fresh bananas. And what about banana chips? Their benefits depend on the method of preparation and ingredients. While there is no doubt about homemade banana chips, store-bought dehydrated bananas are often fried in palm oil, then seasoned with a lot of sugar or syrup, and finally loaded with a flavor enhancer and preservatives. Such a “chemical” company negates all the health benefits of this fruit snack … Therefore, I highly recommend you to make homemade banana chips – without sugar, preservatives and other unnecessary elements. They are very easy to make in a dehydrator or oven.

Useful tips for perfect dehydrated bananas:

  • if you want your dehydrated bananas to have a divine flavor and a rich taste, then choose ripe (but firm) bananas (unripe bananas are less sweet, not so fragrant and tasty; overripe bananas are also not suitable for chips, use them to bake banana bread or make banana cream)
  • it’s very important to cut the bananas into slices of the same thickness (use knife or a mandoline slicer) -thanks to this, all banana chips will dry evenly)
  • bananas “like” to stick to dehydrator trays. To prevent them from sticking during dehydration flip the slices over from time to time

Ingredients

  • bananas (quantity depends on your choice)
  • lemon juice (the proportion is ½ lemon juice for 1 banana)

How to make gomemade banana chips

First of all, peel the bananas and cut them into 1/4 inch (1/2cm) slices. Pour some lemon juice over them and leave for 2-3 minutes (lemon juice will not only protect bananas from darkening but also make dehydrated bananas especially fragrant)

Place the slices on the dehydrator tray in one layer so that they don’t touch each other. Set the temperature to 135F (60 C) and cook them for 6-10 hours. How long does it take to dehydrate banana chips? It depends on the thickness of the slices, the humidity in your house, and also on what kind of dried bananas you prefer – chewy or crunchy.

Ready dehydrated banana slices will look like this and may be slightly sticky but not mushy (just don’t over-dry them, so that you don’t have to go to the dentist later (too dry bananas are hard enough).

Remove the finished banana chips out of the dehydrator, let them cool and enjoy!

Frequently asked Dehydrated bananas questions:

Can I make banana chips in the oven?

The absence of a dehydrator is not a reason to give up such a pleasure as homemade banana chips. They can be cooked in the oven. To do this, cover a baking sheet with parchment and lightly grease it with oil (sunflower, peanut or coconut oil are suitable – with the latter, the chips will have an interesting tropical flavor and aroma). Arrange the banana slices on a baking sheet in one layer. Turn the oven to 135F (60 C) and dry the bananas for 6-10 hours. Don’t forget to turn the slices over from time to time and check if they are ready.

How long do banana chips last and how to store them?

Leave the dried bananas to cool completely, then transfer them to a clean, airtight container (you can sprinkle them with powdered sugar) and store them at room temperature for up to 6 months (although it is unlikely that you will leave such a yummy for so long).

How to use dehydrated bananas?

• Firstly: the simplest solution is to just eat them (if you like cinnamon, season the ready-made chips with it -you will get double yummy)
• Secondly: add them to yogurt, pour honey or maple syrup on top and enjoy
• And finally: dehydrated bananas are a great addition to homemade granola

Start your day with a delicious breakfast – make yogurt, add homemade dehydrated bananas and a spoonful of honey. This will give you a boost of energy and a good mood for the whole day!
