These no bake chocolate balls or cookie truffles are a fantastic dessert. The recipe is very simple, but their taste is really divine

Jump to recipe

Homemade no bake cookie truffles are not just a dessert. These chocolate balls are filled with happiness! Just take a bite, immerse yourself in the sweet world… and immediately everything around will seem brighter and more fun. If you have a sweet tooth you will definitely understand me!

I can easily refuse meat dishes, but when it comes to desserts, I completely lose my self-control. Especially, if I see chocolate sweets in front of me … that’s it – I just have to eat them! Without any remorse… LOL…

This is not a recipe for classic homemade chocolate truffles made with ganache. I will definitely write about them later, too. But now let me introduce you to my favorite chocolate balls recipe. This dessert is very similar in shape and taste to truffles, but its consistency resembles no-bake cookies.

You will definitely like these chocolate balls

  • These cookie truffles are super easy to make! Even children can make this dessert without problems and with pleasure. Here, as in the case of a chocolate salami, you do not have to be a pastry chef with 100 years of experience. No special skills are needed and there is no baking involved! All you need is a few simple ingredients, 10 minutes of time, and… a blender.
  • These are the perfect chocolate sweets for a buffet. You can make them ahead of time (no, you even should make them ahead of time – the taste and texture will only benefit from this). In addition, these homemade chocolate balls are already portioned, so if you are planning a menu for a party, do not forget about this bite-sized treat… it will definitely be the first to disappear from the table.
  • This homemade chocolate truffles recipe is easily adaptable to any age. For adults, add espresso and rum. If you are preparing chocolate truffles for children, replace the classic coffee with Nesquik. As a result, everyone will be happy and satisfied!
  • No expensive and exotic ingredients are needed here. These cookie truffles are made with “improvised materials”, but their taste is truly divine.
  • Looking for great gift ideas? Make chocolate balls! Put them in a beautiful box, decorate it with a ribbon, and you are guaranteed a “wow” effect. Handmade gifts are always priceless…
  • It’s an elegant dessert with a romantic touch. Who said that a Valentine’s Day dessert should be exclusively heart-shaped? These homemade chocolate rum balls with their rich chocolate flavor and seductive rum flavor are just perfect for a romantic dinner! Moreover, it is a wonderful Christmas and New Year’s Eve dessert and original decoration for a festive cake. It’s a wonderful addition to ice cream, and just delicious sweet chocolate bites for coffee and tea. Don’t wait for some holiday to enjoy something delicious, make yourself a gastronomic holiday every day!

Homemade no-bake chocolate balls are easy to adapt to your preferences

This recipe was inspired by the Swedish chocolate balls, but the ingredients for this recipe are slightly different.

If you coat these chocolate sweets in different sprinkles, you will get a wonderful bite-size dessert with different flavors.

Coating options are endless: regular sugar (my favorite option); powdered sugar; desiccated coconut; cocoa powder; chopped nuts; chocolate or colored sprinkles…

Additions and substitutions

If you want to change the taste or add something new to these homemade chocolate truffles, feel free to experiment:

  • a pinch of dry ground paprika turns chocolate rum truffles into a dessert with an intriguing character
  • the chocolate chip will make these homemade sweets even more chocolaty
  • candied oranges (or grated orange zest) and chocolate balls are a perfect match – you’ll love this orange chocolate ball version
  • finely chopped pistachios will interestingly change the taste melody
  • add mint syrup instead of rum – you’ll get unusually fresh and elegant cookie truffles
  • replace some of the crushed ladyfingers cookies with desiccated coconut for original chocolate coconut balls

Be careful, these homemade chocolate balls cause addiction… I’m joking, of course. But just try them once and you will fall in love with them forever! Anyway, that’s not a problem. Have I already told you that this recipe is extremely easy and fast? Therefore, you can make cookie truffles even every single day.

Ingredients

If you are a happy digital kitchen scale owner, I highly recommend using it instead of cups and spoons. Especially when it comes to baking recipes. A scale gives you far more accurate results than volume measurements (everyone scoops ingredients differently). Trust me, using a kitchen scale to measure ingredients will take your baking to a new level.

  • 7oz (200g) ladyfingers biscuits
  • ½ cup + 1Tbsp (130g) unsalted butter
  • ½ cup (70g) powdered sugar
  • ¼ cup (30g) cocoa
  • 2 ½ Tbsp (35g) espresso
  • ¼ cup (30g) finely chopped nuts (any nuts will do: walnuts, hazelnuts, or almonds)
  • 1 tsp rum (optional) – I use 10 drops of rum extract instead of rum
  • ½ tsp ground cinnamon
  • sugar (for coating)

Chocolate balls step – by – step recipe

Place the ladyfingers cookies in a blender bowl and crush them finely to get crumbs

Combine powdered sugar, ground cinnamon, finely chopped nuts, cocoa powder, and the crushed cookies

Add espresso, rum (or extract), and melted butter. Mix well. You will get a crispy wet dough. There is one useful tip on how to make a chocolate ball –  use slightly wet hands to shape the dough into walnut-sized round chocolate balls. After that coat them in sugar

Put the finished cookie truffles in the fridge for at least 2 hours. Bon appetit!

FAQ

How to store these chocolate sweets?

The composition of this dessert includes butter, so it should be refrigerated – this is important for its structure. Put these no bake homemade chocolate truffles in an airtight container and store them in the fridge for up to 7 days. But, believe me, you will eat them much sooner!

Can I substitute butter for margarine in this recipe?

Never substitute butter for margarine in this recipe. Margarine will spoil the whole taste and quality of chocolate balls. Homemade sweets should be delicious and of high quality, right? Make them with the best ingredients and don’t deny yourself anything.

Enjoy these homemade chocolate balls yourself and treat your friends and family to them!

I have to make these delightful treats for my kids’ party. I can’t use rum, but I have almond syrup at home. Will it still be okay? Or should I reduce the amount of sugar?

Dear Suzanne, yes, the almond syrup should work fine in this recipe. You don’t need to reduce the amount of sugar unless you prefer a less sweet taste. Enjoy making these sweets for your kids’ party!
